“Robot” entered English with an origin story more traceable than almost any word in the language: it was coined on purpose, for one specific occasion, by one specific pair of brothers, on a datable night. The word comes from Karel Čapek's play R.U.R. — Rossum's Universal Robots, written in 1920 and first staged in Prague on 25 January 1921. Before that night, “robot” wasn't a word for a manufactured or mechanical being in any language. Within two or three years, it was one in English, French, German, and beyond.
But R.U.R. didn't invent the idea it named — manufactured labor that turns on the people who made it — so much as inherit two centuries of folklore, stage magic, and fiction, and give the whole tradition, for the first time, a name that stuck. This is the story of the name, and the run-up to it.
The coinage
Robota, not robot
Karel Čapek nearly called them something else. Working on the play in early 1920, he wanted a word for the artificial workers at its center and reached for Latin: labori, from labor. By his own later account it read too bookish — a coinage that belonged in a dictionary, not on a stage. He took the problem to his older brother Josef, a painter and writer he collaborated with often, and asked what to call them instead. Josef, according to Karel's own retelling in a 1933 letter to the journalist Fedor Kubka, didn't look up from the canvas he was working on.[1] “Then call them Robots,” he said, and went back to painting.
The word he reached for, robota, was already loaded. It's the old Czech (and broader West Slavic) term for the unpaid forced labor a serf owed a feudal landlord — a fixed number of days worked on the lord's land, from the same root as words for “servitude” and “drudgery” across Slavic languages. It wasn't archaic in 1920 the way it can read now: the corvée system it describes had only been formally abolished across the Habsburg lands in 1848, within living memory for anyone Čapek's parents' age. Naming synthetic factory labor after literal feudal servitude wasn't a neutral choice of syllables — it was the play's whole argument, compressed into a name, before a word of dialogue had been spoken.

What actually happens in R.U.R.
Rossum's Universal Robots — the play's full title, and the name of the fictional company at its center — is set at a factory on an unnamed island, where an aging scientist's synthetic-biology process is used to mass-produce artificial people: grown from a vat-cultured organic substance, not assembled from metal, closer to what a modern reader would call bioengineered labor than to a machine with gears. They're sold worldwide as cheap, tireless workers, and by the time the curtain rises they've replaced most human labor outright. The plot turns, inevitably, on the Robots developing resentment, organizing, and rising up — wiping out nearly the entire human cast within a single act, sparing only an engineer they judge capable of feeling something like love, in a final scene that reads as equal parts hopeful and bleak.
Worth saying plainly: R.U.R.'s “robots” are not what the word means today. They're synthetic organic beings, closer kin to Frankenstein's creature than to R2-D2. The word drifted toward “mechanical automaton” only over the following decades, as science fiction — including Čapek's own later writing — pulled it in that direction. In January 1921, “robot” meant, specifically, a manufactured worker with no legal personhood. Everything else came later.
Precedent, 16th–20th century
Prague's clay precedent: the golem
Čapek didn't need to invent the shape of the story — his own city already had one. The golem legend, a figure of animated clay brought to life to serve and protect, is most often attached to Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the historical chief rabbi of 16th-century Prague. The specific tale of Loew building a golem to defend the Jewish quarter, though, is largely a later literary construction rather than a contemporary account: it was substantially assembled and popularized in print centuries after Loew's death, most influentially in Yudl Rosenberg's 1909 story collection Niflaot Maharal and again in Gustav Meyrink's bestselling 1915 novel Der Golem[2] — written and set in the same city Čapek was writing in six years later. The shared shape is exact: a being made to labor and obey, which becomes uncontrollable. R.U.R. transplants it from clay and folklore into biology and a factory contract.
And it wasn't just sitting quietly in print. In the exact window Čapek was working up to R.U.R., the golem was a working screen property, not a dusty legend somebody had to go dig up. The actor-director Paul Wegener, fascinated by the story, built a run of three films around it in six years: Der Golem (1915, co-directed with Henrik Galeen — a contemporary-set horror-mystery, now mostly lost apart from fragments), a lighter, semi-comic sequel Der Golem und die Tänzerin (“The Golem and the Dancer,” 1917), and a prequel, Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam (“The Golem: How He Came Into the World,” 1920), which dramatized Loew's creation of the creature with the full visual vocabulary of German Expressionist cinema and became one of the most widely seen German films of its decade. That last one opened across Europe barely a year before R.U.R.'s premiere. Čapek wasn't reviving folklore for his audience — he was writing a play about manufactured, rebelling labor into a Prague that had just watched the golem do the same thing at the movies.
Three golem films in six years

Precedent, 1739–1774
Two centuries of mechanical stand-ins
Outside folklore, Europe had spent nearly two hundred years building actual machines to perform the appearance of labor and life. Jacques de Vaucanson's Digesting Duck, exhibited in Paris in 1739, appeared to eat grain and excrete waste through a hidden chemical reservoir — a stunt, not real digestion, but a machine built specifically to convince an audience that mechanism could do a body's work. Pierre Jaquet-Droz's automata of the early 1770s — the Writer, the Draughtsman, the Musician — were mechanically far more sophisticated, executing programmable, cam-driven sequences of actual handwriting and drawing, and still run on demand in a Swiss museum today. And in 1770, Wolfgang von Kempelen unveiled the Turk, a chess-playing automaton that toured Europe defeating challengers for decades, until it was revealed to conceal a human chess master folded into its cabinet the whole time.
The Turk's real trick
In hindsight, the Turk is an almost too-perfect precedent for R.U.R.: a machine sold to the public as autonomous, brilliant labor, whose “intelligence” was actually a person, hidden, doing uncredited work inside the box. Contemporaries suspected as much almost immediately; the mechanism wasn't publicly and conclusively confirmed until decades after its debut.
Precedent, 1816–1818
Made things that turn on their makers
The literary line runs at least as directly to R.U.R. as the mechanical one. E.T.A. Hoffmann's 1816 story “Der Sandmann” centers on Olimpia, an automaton mistaken for a living woman, and the horror of discovering a manufactured thing convincing enough to love. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, two years later, gave the tradition its most durable shape: a creator assembles a being from parts, gives it a kind of life, and then refuses to take responsibility for it — the creature's turn to violence reads, in most modern criticism, as the direct consequence of that abandonment, not an inherent flaw in the being itself. R.U.R. runs the identical argument at industrial scale: Rossum's company manufactures millions of the things and extends them no more moral consideration than a shipment of parts, and the ending plays out as the bill finally coming due.
Precedent, 1908–1913
Čapek's own dry run, and the real factory floor
Čapek had rehearsed this exact material once before. In 1908, twelve years before R.U.R., he and Josef co-wrote a short story called “Systém” (“System”), about a factory owner who reorganizes his workforce under a strict efficiency doctrine — treating workers as interchangeable, standardized units to be optimized like machine parts — with results that curdle by the story's end. It's a smaller, unproduced dry run of R.U.R.'s exact anxiety, years before either brother had settled on a name for it.
That anxiety had an obvious real-world referent. Frederick Winslow Taylor's The Principles of Scientific Management (1911) had turned “optimize human labor like a mechanical process” into a named discipline, and Henry Ford's moving assembly line at Highland Park, running since 1913, was the most famous working proof of it — a human workforce broken into small, repetitive, interchangeable motions, standing at fixed stations while the work moved past them instead of the reverse. R.U.R. didn't have to invent the fear that industrial efficiency was quietly dissolving what made a worker a person rather than a part. It just had to give that fear a name, a stage, and an ending.

1922–1941
How the word got out
R.U.R. wasn't a quiet succès d'estime — it spread with unusual speed for a Czech-language stage play. The Theatre Guild staged an English-language production on Broadway in October 1922, translated by Paul Selver with dialogue reworked for the stage by Nigel Playfair; the London production followed at St Martin's Theatre in April 1923. Both were commercial hits, and “robot” rode the play's success straight into English-language newspapers, then into everyday use, inside of two or three years — an unusually fast and unusually well-documented coinage-to-common-noun timeline for any word in the language.
The word kept moving after that. Isaac Asimov, writing science fiction through the 1940s, needed a term for the study of the things and reached for the obvious suffix: “robotics” first appears in his short story “Liar!”, published in Astounding Science Fiction in May 1941 — itself a new coinage, built on a twenty-year-old one, for a field of engineering that barely existed yet. Asimov's Three Laws followed the next year, in “Runaround,” and did more than any single later work to fix “robot” in the public imagination as mechanical, obedient, and governed by rules — the near-opposite, in almost every particular, of Čapek's original organic, rebellious, ungoverned Robots. The word survived its own meaning changing out from under it twice over, and is still doing that today.
